Àsìkò What do you think of when you hear the word future? Do you imagine something distant, one year from now, ten years, or even fifty? What if the future is not some faraway destination, but something we experience every second? The truth is, all we ever truly have is this moment. We spend much of our lives chasing a future we believe will bring clarity, success, or fulfilment. Yet time does not pause for us, nor does it arrive with ceremony. It moves quietly and continuously, turning tomorrow into today and today into yesterday before we even realise it. This artwork reflects that silent and inevitable passage of time. The face is not divided between two different people; it is one individual shown across different moments of existence. The left side appears aged and weathered, marked by lived experiences and the weight of time. The right side is younger, still unfolding, still becoming. Yet both sides remain inseparable because they are the same person. The red stitches running through the centre are not symbols of injury or pain. They represent the thread of existence itself, binding together the past, present, and future. They serve as a reminder that these stages of life are never truly separate. We do not enter the future as entirely new people; instead, we carry every version of ourselves forward. Who we were, who we are, and who we are becoming exist together in one continuous flow. So why do we spend so much time anticipating what lies ahead instead of embracing the moment we are already living in? Life is not waiting somewhere in the future. It is happening now, in this breath, in this second. Àsìkò is not something to chase. It is something to live. Enjoy it. Live it. Because this moment is all we ever truly own.
